Academy of Make Up Arts Advanced Program Alumni Allie Corzine competed in IMATS NYC this Spring and won second place in the Battle of the Brushes Fantasy/Beauty category. Now she has been accepted to compete in Battle of the Brushes IMATS Sydney Australia! Allie took a moment to talk to us recently about her success.
What made you decide to compete at IMATS?
While in school the instructors really encouraged everyone to sign up for IMATS Battle of the Brushes. Makeup isn’t a hobby for me – I want it to be my career and this seemed like a great opportunity to launch my career in the makeup world! I applied knowing I would most likely not get picked to compete. Never would I have imagined I would get picked twice!
What did you learn at IMATS NYC?
One of the biggest things I learned at IMATS is to be confident in your work! When we landed in New York I instantly got butterflies and started doubting everything I had planned. My model (who is one of my best friends) was very supportive and kept reminding me that she thought my look was a winning look. When time was up and brushes down I looked around to see what everyone else had done. The quality of everyone’s work was amazing, and the butterflies came back! When they announced that I was awarded 2nd place – my mind was blown! Ever sense that experience I try to remind myself to be confident in my work. I am my own biggest critic and all I can do is to do my best – and that’s going to be enough!
Congrats on getting into IMATS in Sydnie! What advice would you give to makeup artists who are thinking of applying?
If anyone is thinking or considering competing I would say DO IT!! Don’t doubt yourself! Just going is an amazing experience and one that I will never forget! It’s a great way to get your name and work out to the public! Since IMATS I have worked on a music video for Switchfoot, lots of photo shoots, and am currently working on a full-length movie. I truly believe those opportunities came because of the exposure I gained by participating in IMATS.
